The Dallas Mavericks will surely be looking to improve their roster around Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis in the NBA offseason. They will be a team to watch in NBA trade rumors as a result.
The Houston Rockets have sorely struggled this season after shifting course due to the James Harden trade. Given how Eric Gordon will be 33-years-old next NBA season, surely he will be on the trading block in the offseason. This could spell opportunity for the Mavericks.
In a recent article by Brett Siegel of NBA Analysis Network, he suggested the Mavericks to trade for Rockets guard Eric Gordon using a package of Josh Green and a 2025 first round pick.
Whether it is being a facilitator on offense or creating space for others, Eric Gordon knows his role and can still be an effective player for a championship contending team.
This is why he could potentially be a trade target for the Mavericks, but again, he is owed a lot of money over the next few seasons and they would have to invest quite a bit into him to bring him in. Not to mention, they would not have much cap space to sign or trade for anybody else in the offseason by making this move.
One of the main benefits that Siegel highlighted for the Mavericks is how it makes the most of their salary cap spending room. Given how Dallas won’t have many options for big-named players in NBA free agency, this would be a logical option.
Overall though, if they can get away with the trade above or even taking Josh Green out of the equation and just trading a future first-round pick, the Mavs get a ton of value from an experienced player that they probably cannot get in free agency with their cap space. This is why investing in Eric Gordon could make a lot of sense for Dallas.
There is a clear need for the Mavericks to continue to add shooting to their roster to maximize their half-court offense with Luka Doncic. However, adding a player that can not only up a high volume of three-pointers but can also shoot off-the-dribble and get to the rim is important. Eric Gordon checks all of those boxes.
It will be intriguing to see how the Dallas Mavericks will end up adding talent to their roster in the NBA offseason. Only time will tell if it will include Eric Gordon in a deal with the Houston Rockets. It will be a scenario to monitor in NBA trade rumors.
